ASJ1001 - Pommel/Sword Handle
Pommel or sword handle end piece finely carved in sea-green jade. The design is a classic one from the Warring States period, but these were so commonly used as hat ornaments among the Song military elite that we will be conservative and date it to the medieval. The front has a central rondel with wave and cloud patterns surrounded by continuos rice shoots or curls. On the back is a mounting for a bronze or iron handle, recessed into the greenish jade. Clear evidence of burial aging on this rare jade material from a still unfound northern mountainous source. Shaanxi province. Excellent condition with one minute contact chip mentioned for identification and accuracy. 1 5/8 inches diameter by 3/8 inches deep.
