FOR SALE: Antique White Nephrite Jades

White jades have been considered the top-of-the-line since the Song Dynasty. Only the best carvers were trusted with it, and they either worked for the Emperor and his family, the highest ranking officials, or they worked illegally (the material would have been stolen or confiscated improperly, as the Emperor was considered to be the "owner" of all of the jade deposits and imports....it was his "right" as sole heavenly intercessor - or Son of Heaven - since jade was the Stone of Heaven).

Our collection of antique white jades is small, as the number of pieces on the market at any time is exceedingly small.

AWJ1001 - Stepping/Dancing Boy

[Picture of Stepping/Dancing Boy] Stepping or dancing boy holding peaches and branches (symbolizing happiness) behind him, on which a bat (symbolizing long life) is resting. 2 7/16 inches tall, well polished and of near-flawless Xinjiang nephrite, it is a pleasing, well carved and reticulated mid-Qing carving (1750-1850 AD) Were the jade a little brighter white, it would be tempting to call this a palace workshop example, since the design and execution is so unique and well done. A special jade deserving of the finest collection. PRICE: $850.00

AWJ1003 - Fu Dragon Chop-form Amulet

[Picture of Fu Dragon Chop-form Amulet] Interesting chop-form amulet that probably served as a paper weight, a fu dragon is looking back over his shoulder, his body twisted in a circle. The white jade is uniform but only of mid quality with some evidences of 19th century and 20th century use. 1 5/8 inches tall, nicely smooth and reticulated, he will be a pleasing addition to anyone's jade cabinet. PRICE: $250.00

AWJ1004 - Duck/Goose

[Picture of Duck/Goose] Stylized form of a duck or goose, seen in profile, in a fine white opaque jade that shows light evidence of burial incursion on one side. The exaggerated chest and flaring tail feathers suggest a style derived from northern Liao / Jin art. The heavier body than is characteristic of these earlier pieces suggests this is a northern-styled example dating from the Yuan or early Ming. Wonderfully smooth to the touch and delightful to the eye, it is a rare and wondrous creation. 2 7/16 inches long by 3/4 inches thick. PRICE: $895.00

AWJ1006 - Cat With Sacred Fungus

[Picture of Cat with Fungus] Translucent white nephrite, cat-like animal holding the lingxi sacred fungus, which sits on his haunches, acting as a resting pad for a longevity bat. A sweet carving with excellent workmanship and polish. 2 1/8 inches long by 5/8 inches thick. A 19th century small masterpiece. PRICE: $395.00

AWJ1008 - Antique White Jade Phoenix Bird

[Picture of Phoenix Bird] An unusual Xinjiang white Nephrite jade amulet of a large upright Phoenix bird in profile, puffed out and displaying all of her feathered finery, with a smaller Dragon facing her and climbing up for an embrace. Clearly a historical reference to Empress Cixi (the Phoenix) who dominated her male (Dragon) relations in the latter half of the 19th century. This large and impressive jade is pierced in numerous places and carved out inside, a technique that would have consumed months to accomplish. The fine translucent Nephrite has several subtle slightly-more-opaque lines within the natural stone material that do not detract, is very well executed, in perfect condition, and harmoniously conceived. Mounted for waist suspension with a green Peking glass bead, it would make a fine pendent also. Possibly meant to be satirical, it is 2-1/2" tall by 1-3/4" wide. A rare historical treasure. PRICE: $575.00 [See picture of back]

AWJ1009 - Antique White Jade Dancing Boy

[Picture of Dancing Boy] "Boy Dancing over the Waves" with an auspicous cloud design above, all in an oval plaque that is well-smoothed and of fine translucent white Manchurian Jade. 19th century, a poem in Chinese script is on the back, with an apparent signature at the left in a small vertical rectangle. Under magnification it is seen that the surfaces have not been given their final polish, so this may have been a commemorative or honorary piece that had a time deadline for presentation, which did not allow for the final finish. Fisth I have seen like that on a white jade, but it is a historically known occurrence. 2-3/16" tall by 1-3/4" wide, in perfect condition, and mounted with a black silk neck cord. PRICE: $290.00 [See picture of back]

AWJ1010 - Antique White Jade Immortal Li Ning-Yang

[Picture of Immortal] Medicinal healing is symbolized by this Daoist carving of one of the Eight Immortals, Li Ning-Yang. He carries a crutch and holds a gourd of life-preserving medicine in front of him. Of near-white, translucent, pure and hard Manchurian Jade of Liaoning Province, this nicely formed piece shows smoothing and has a few minor edge knocks (under magnification) from many years in use. Unfortunatly, his crutch was broken at some point and then repaired and thus the low, low price of this piece. 2-3/16" tall, he has been left "original" (dirty) by the first collector that owned him. A fine collector piece that probably was carried by a healing shaman. PRICE: $185.00 [See picture of back]
